When we first saw Nuriko, he was a "she". The reason for that was he was trying to be
like his sister, Kourin, who was trampled by a runaway horse and died. Nuriko blamed himself
for Kourin's death, so much that he pretended to be Kourin and entered the palace of Emperor
Hotohori as one of the Emperor's concubine. He was first jealous of Miaka since Hotohori liked
her very much but as time goes by, he became fond of Miaka and treated her as his sister.
This part contains major spoiler pictures and info. If you have already watched the whole series of Fushigi Yuugi, then go ahead and scroll down. If you haven't but your curiosity was already peaked, then go ahead. But I'm telling you, this spoiler is a major sad spoiler...so here goes...
Ok here's the really sad story of what happened to Nuriko. In episode 33,
Nuriko admitted to Tamahome that he has a crush on Miaka. But being the gentleman that he is, he
also told Tamahome that he won't do anything to hinder their relationship. He said that Miaka
is like a sister to her. He also decided to stop being Kourin and to let go of the past.
And he cuts his hair...*drool*...as a sign of letting go of his sister.
So anyway, on their way to a mountain (I forgot the name and I also forgot what they were
supposed to get on that mountain *grins sheepishly*) Nuriko volunteered to go on alone and
told Tamahome and Miaka to get the other Suzaku Seishi. When he got to the mountain, he
saw a big, big rock covering the entrance. While preparing to remove the rock,
Ashitare attacked him under the orders of Nakago. He tried to fight with all his might but
Ashitare was also very strong. With a last desperate attempt, he attacked Ashitare with all
his strength and so Ashitare retreated. Wounded and bleeding heavily, Nuriko still staggered
towards the mountain and with all his powers, lifted the rock off the entrance. After that,
he laid down the snow, reminisced about his life, and died...*sniff sniff* The other Suzaku
Seishi sensed about Nuriko's death and hurried over to that mountain, unfortunately when
they got there, it was too late...
